What will be recognized as the second straw-fired power plant in the U.K. is under development in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, in eastern England.

North Midland Construction plc recently announced it has been awarded a £9.5 million ($14.9 million) contract by Burmeister Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S for work on the 38 MW plant, which according to the company will consist of two 0.75 acre straw barns, a wood chip import facility, combined turbine and boiler halls, and administration buildings. The external works for the 10-acre site will include sustainable drainage solutions, roads and high-voltage export facilities for the generated power.

Surplus heat from the plant will be piped to Sleaford’s public swimming pool and some other community facilities in the town.

The project’s developer is Eco2 Biomass Energy, which has completed and is constructing several other biomass power projects across the U.K., including a 40 MW straw-fired power plant in Brigg, North Lincolnshire, England.

Construction of the Sleaford plant has begun, and when it’s complete about 80 permanent jobs are expected. The facility will also provide local straw contracts of up to £10m ($15.7 million) per year.

The plant is due to be operational in 2014.
