New Hampshire-based Simply Green Biofuels, a biofuel distribution company, was presented with the Maine Environmental Hero Award Sept. 13 at the Going Green Expo in Saco, Maine. Simply Green Biofuels was nominated for the award by Charles Nestor, Going Green Expo's vice president, for the assistance the company provided citizens last winter when fuel prices spiked.
"Simply Green was doing a lot of great work in Maine with the fuel crisis earlier this year," Nestor said. "And when they turned around and did the same for New Hampshire I was just blown away and knew that they deserved this award."
Simply Green Biofuels provides biodiesel products, biodiesel for marine use, and BioHeat home heating oil in blends of B5 to B100 to areas in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. Approximately 60 percent of the company's business is derived from home heating applications. According to the company, fuels containing B5 to B20 can be used in home heating systems without modification. Approximately 70 percent of Simply Green Biofuels' customers use B5 BioHeat home heating oil, and progressively move up to B20. Some customers have modified their home heating systems to use B80 BioHeat home heating oil. The company, which uses a blend of soybean oil and tallow as feedstock, also distributes biodiesel.
Last winter, Veilleux Oil, Price Rite and Perron Fuels allegedly failed to honor contracts made with 300 pre-paid customers at fixed rates. Simply Green Biofuels spokeswoman Shannon Hill read about the issue in a local paper and alerted the company's president. Through the media, Simply Green Biofuels offered to honor the victims' contracted prices for home heating oil. More than 75 people responded to the offer and were supplied BioHeat home heating oil for their contracted price of $2.30 per gallon, even though market prices were approximately $3.50 per gallon.
"When one of my employees approached me with this story, I knew immediately that we had to help these folks," said Andrew Kellar, owner of Simply Green Biofuels. "It was the right thing to do."
This fall, Simply Green Biofuels plans to open New Hampshire's first exclusive biofuel retail station.
