More than 75 percent of the biodiesel produced in the United States is now produced and marketed by companies that have met the National Biodiesel Board's BQ-9000 quality assurance certification program.
According to the NBB, six new biodiesel producers and marketers have achieved certification. Companies receiving certification include: biodiesel marketer Downs Co. of Corona, Calif.; biodiesel producers Piedmont Biofuels of Pittsboro, N.C.; Beacon Energy Corp. of Cleburne, Texas; Lake Erie Biofuels of Erie, Pa.; Paseo Cargill Energy of Kansas City, Mo.; and Ag Processing Inc. of St. Joseph, Mo.
The NBB said this is the largest group at any one time to become certified, bringing the total number of certified production companies to 33. In addition, there are now 15 certified marketers.
More than a product specification, the BQ-9000 couples the ASTM D-6751 specification for biodiesel fuel blend stock for middle distillate fuels with universally accepted practices for the storage, sampling, testing, blending, shipping, distribution, and management of biodiesel fuel. The certification is awarded after the successful formal review and audit of a company's quality system documentation and the company's conformance to its system to determine whether the company has the capacity and commitment to produce or market biodiesel that meets the ASTM D-6751.
The BQ-9000 certification is open to all companies who are actively producing, distributing, or marketing biodiesel or who are planning to do so, either in its pure form or for use in blending with petroleum diesel.
