South Dakota's blender pump program, initiated in May on behalf of the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council and South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, has proven to be a success.
Grant funding for 45 stations, each eligible for up to $5,000, was allocated to install blender pumps and according to EPIC and SDCUC, 45 applications have been received and all program requirements have been met by those applicants.
As of mid-November, 34 of the 45 applicants have already installed blender pumps, which are located in 27 cities across the state of South Dakota - making the state second only to Minnesota with respect to the number of blender pumps available to flex-fuel-vehicle drivers.
Currently midlevel blends can only legally be consumed in flex-fuel vehicles. "We are confident research will demonstrate that E15, E20 or even E30 can be run in conventional vehicles with no changes needed," said Toni Nuernberg, executive director of EPIC.
In addition, a statewide radio and print campaign began on Nov. 5 to educate consumers about midlevel blends, blender pumps and where they can be found in the state.
