Sweden-based Lantmännen Agroetanol's 210 million liter (approximately 55.5 MMgy) grain ethanol plant in Norrköping, Sweden, is commencing start-up operations after a plant expansion project. The facility's previous capacity was 57 million liters (approximately 15.1 million gallons), Austrian process technology provider Vogelbusch GmbH reported Dec. 9.

The plant is now reported to be the largest one in northern Europe.

Vogelbusch's technology is a multi-pressure system which reduces energy consumption by recycling steam used in the distillation process. The system uses more than 50 percent less steam than conventional technologies, generating equivalent savings in the energy required to produce it, according to Vogelbusch.

Lantmännen's Agroetanol's ethanol plant, which is powered by a nearby biomass power station, also produces pelletized protein feed that is supplied to animal feed companies and carbon dioxide that is used in soda manufacturing and dry ice production.
