Biofuels analyst Will Thurmond released his latest comprehensive biodiesel report in late March. "Algae 2020: Next Generation Biofuels Markets and Commercialization Outlook" covers algae's market outlook and profiles several companies developing new technologies. Thurmond predicts the first large-scale algae production destined for the U.S.
Department of Defense will begin in 2011. "There is a lot of hype around algae," Thurmond admitted in a webinar previewing the publication. After discussions with experts, surveys of many companies, and tours of several research and development facilities, Thurmond expects algae production to reach commercial levels between 2013 and 2015. The cost for algae oil production will drop, market share will rise, and by 2020 he says algae will become a mainstream commodity for biodiesel, biocrude and ethanol. The report is available at
