Iowa is about to add another biodiesel plant to its growing roster of producers.
Tri-City Energy is expected to begin production later this month in the Mississippi River town of Keokuk, Iowa.
The 5 MMgy facility is slated to begin producing biodiesel Nov. 17, according to Al Moander, Tri-City's sales and marketing manager. The plant, which began construction in January, is currently undergoing start-up testing and final improvements such as installing pipe and tank insulation. Moander said he expects it will take a week to get the plant fully on line. "Then we'll find out what kind of product we've got," he said. "We've got high expectations."
The Tri-City plant is housed in a former General Mills wheat processing facility built in the 1930s. Moander said the biodiesel plant includes a "fully equipped lab" capable of conducting all tests required to determine ASTM compliance.
The 5 MMgy plant is the first of a four-phase project in Keokuk. The second and third phases consist of a 30 MMgy biodiesel plant and 25 million bushel per year soy crush facility along the Keokuk waterfront. Groundbreaking could occur as soon as later this month on the 30 MMgy plant, according to Moander. Both projects are expected to become operational in fall 2007.
The fourth phase of the project would convert the 5 MMgy to utilize animal fats and greases as feedstock. The plant could also be used as an R&D facility. "We can look to the future with this plant," Moander said.
Another Tri-City-affiliated biodiesel project is in the permitting stages. Lion Energy is a proposed 15 MMgy plant in Altoona, Iowa. It would be built by
TC Energy, a joint venture between Tri-City Energy developers, equipment supplier Technochem International and oil extraction equipment manufacturer Insta-Pro International. The venture, which will build and ship turnkey biodiesel plants from a Keokuk facility, was
formally announced in August with plans to build up to 10 biodiesel plants in and around Iowa.
