Tri-State Biodiesel has been named as one of 12 finalists for the
Social Venture Network's second annual Innovation Awards. Tri-State has been producing biodiesel derived from locally-obtained yellow grease since 2007 and was chosen as a finalist for the award due to the sustainability factor of its process.
"Just to be nominated for consideration by one of the United State's most powerful forces for social good is a great honor, but selection as a finalist is a phenomenal opportunity," said Tri-State Chief Executive Officer Brent Baker. "We hope that this selection will raise not only our profile, but also the profile of sustainably-produced biodiesel as a whole."
Baker said his company collects used cooking oil from thousands of New York restaurants and the biodiesel produced by Tri-State in 2007 displaced approximately seven million pounds of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
The Social Venture Network is a peer-to-peer member group consisting of over 500 investors, company executives and non-profit leaders who are committed to running socially responsible businesses and organizations.
Tri-State is the first biodiesel company to be considered for the award. Other 2008 finalists include organic food companies, loan providers, career development companies and sustainable building designers. Finalists were selected via an application process in which company/non-profit leaders needed to prove their business implemented practices that have a positive impact on the environment and/or society. Applicants had to have begun implementing their "new" idea no more than five years ago and were required to demonstrate impact through at least six months of implementation.
By the end of September, six award recipients will be chosen by a panel of network members. Award winners will receive a one-year membership to the Social Venture Network and will be honored at a ceremony to be held Oct. 24 during the network's annual conference in San Diego.
