USDA increases research grant monies over time

December 13, 2006

Contrary to a study released in October by the nonprofit Center for Rural Affairs (CFRA), which reported that farmers were receiving only a small portion of USDA research dollars, the USDA has been increasing its funding to beginning, small- and medium-sized farmers in the past few years. The study looked at funding between 2001 and 2002 that came from four USDA grant programs, said CFRA's Jon Bailey. However, two of these programs weren't available to farmers, according to a USDA spokesman. The USDA awarded $1.47 million to nine minority-owned co-ops in fiscal year 2006.
