Utah DOT grows biodiesel feedstocks

Working in conjunction with Utah State University student Dallas Hanks, who is obtaining a doctorate degree in Plant Soils and Environmental Sciences, the Utah Department of Transportation (DOT) is funding the plantation of four plots of canola, safflower and perennial flax plants that will be used to produce biodiesel. The first seeds, located along state highways from the northern to the central part of the state, were planted in early May as part of Hanks' dissertation. The biodiesel produced will most likely be used to fuel the Utah DOT's vehicle fleet.
