Veolia recently inaugurated a 12.5 MW biomass district heating system in Spain with Móstoles Ecoenergía that will initially provide heat to 3,000 homes. An expansion project planned for next summer will allow the system to heat an additional 4,000 homes.
According to Veolia, the first phase of the project represents a €7 million ($8.27 million) investment. To date, the project has included the construction for 4 kilometers of pipeline and 13 exchange substations.

Information published by Veolia indicates the heating plant consists of three Uniconfort biomass boilers. Two of the boilers have an output of 5,000 kW, while one has an output of 2,000 kW.
Veolia also said the plant will consume 5,934 metric tons of biomass each year. The facility is burning locally-sourced wood chips from land managed by Enerbosque Extremadura S.L.

The biomass heating network is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 9,000 metric tons annually, while reducing energy costs by 15 percent.
