VeraSun Energy is strengthening its hold as the nation's No. 2 ethanol producer. The Brookings, South Dakota-based company announced this week that construction started on two more 110 MMgy plants.
Archer Daniels Midland Co. is the largest U.S. ethanol producer with more than 1.1 billion gallons of production per year. With the completion of VeraSun's newest projects the company expects to have production capacity of 560 MMgy of ethanol by the end of the first quarter of 2008.
VeraSun's two new projects are in Welcome, Minn., and Hartley, Iowa. Both plants are 110 MMgy and being built by Granite Falls, Minn.-based
Fagen Inc. Colwich, Kan.-based
ICM Inc. is providing engineering for both facilities, which are slated to start-up in the first quarter of 2008.
The facilities will each consume more than 39 million bushels of corn per year. VeraSun will market the plants' ethanol and distillers grains.
The company said a public information meeting is being planned with a formal groundbreaking ceremony in the spring of 2007. Contractors are on site and initial site work is underway, according to VeraSun.
The Hartley and Welcome plants will be VeraSun's fourth and fifth facilities. VeraSun's Aurora, S.D., plant began operations in December 2003 and was the first new generation ethanol plant built at 100 MMgy. The plant now produces 120 MMgy. The company's 100 MMgy Fort Dodge, Iowa, facility began production in October 2005.
VeraSun has a third plant under construction near Charles City, Iowa. The 110 MMgy facility is slated to start operations at the end of the second quarter of 2007.
