Biodiesel from corn oil: a growing force

Resurgence in the biodiesel industry and its demand for inedible corn oil extracted from ethanol plants was a topic of great discussion at the Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo last week in Indianapolis. Several experts shared information on the matter.

Biodiesel water content must be reduced, says German oil industry

At the 5th annual expert discussion, oil and biodiesel experts discussed biodiesel filterability and microbial growth, during which the petroleum representatives said the biodiesel industry must reduce the water content in FAME.

Clean Energy Pathways to supply Dorly Petroleum with biodiesel

Clean Energy Pathways Inc. signed a letter of intent to provide 40,000 barrels (about 1.68 million gallons) of ASTM-grade biodiesel to fuel distributor Dorly Petroleum, pending final price negotiation. It will supply B99 for blending down.

New biodiesel fueling location for fleets opens in Tarrant, Ala.

Independent fuel distributor Pacific Pride Services LLC and Quality Petroleum of Alabama jointly opened the first Commercial Fuel Center in Tarrant, Ala., where various blends of biodiesel, up to B20, will be offered for commercial fleet fueling.

ASTM approves biojet annex for hydroprocessed esters

The new annex will set fuel properties for what's called "Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids" (HEFA) fuel derived from biomass feedstocks such as camelina, jatropha or algae, as well as production control criteria of the fuel for aviation use.

EPA sets public hearing for RFS2, clarifies heating oil RIN issue

Following the release of the proposed rule for the 2012 renewable fuel standard's volume requirements set forth by the U.S. EPA, a public hearing has been set for July 12. The hearing will allow interested parties to provide commentary.

Evodos improves algae harvesting system

Evodos BV, an algae technology developer based in Netherlands, believes the company's spiral plate centrifuge created for the harvesting of algae will give algae harvesting a positive energy balance. MBD Energy is already using Evodos' system.

Algae.Tec signs collaboration contract for demonstration plant

Australia-based Algae.Tec Ltd. has formed a collaboration contract with the Manildra Group to construct a demonstration-scale algae production facility at its 100 MMgy ethanol plant in Nowra, Australia.
