21 individuals indicted on grease theft, other charges


A U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Robert J. Higdon Jr., announced June 20 that 21 individuals have been indicted by a grand jury for their roles in a major grease theft ring in the South. Six of the defendants are fugitives.

SRE impacts on biodiesel demand can’t be made up through E15 rule

The U.S. EPA published a notice June 24 announcing it has opened a review of the Renewable Fuel Standard under Section 610 of the Regulatory Flexibility Act, which requires agencies to review rules that have significant impacts on small entities.

Western Dubuque Biodiesel to establish Monarch Fueling Station


The monarch butterfly habitat will be at least one acre near Farley, Iowa. Western Dubuque Biodiesel will start by spraying nonnative grasses this summer and again this fall. A dormant seeding of native plants and milkweed will occur this November.

US EPA updates SRE data, 38 applications now pending for 2018


Another small refinery exemption application for the RFS’s 2018 compliance year has been declared ineligible or withdrawn, according to updated data posted to the U.S. EPA website June 24. Of the 40 filed, 38 are pending and two have been withdrawn.

Concerns rise as low palm oil prices may increase use for biofuel


UFOP fears that use of palm oil will increase because prices have tumbled to a very low level since January 2017, temporarily even falling below diesel fuel prices. The main reason is the continuing rise in global supplies of vegetable oils.

North America’s largest biodiesel producer, Renewable Energy Group Inc., has joined the Diesel Technology Forum, a nonprofit organization promoting the use of clean diesel technologies. REG has 14 active biorefineries across the U.S. and Europe.

Bill aims to increase transparency, predictability of SRE process


Sens. Deb Fischer, R-Nebraska, and Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois, introduced the RFS Integrity Act of 2019 on June 13. The bill aims to bring transparency and predictability to the U.S. EPA’s small refinery exemption (SRE) process.

Virgin Australia hits 1 million km milestone flying Gevo’s SAJF


Gevo announced that Virgin Australia has used Gevo’s sustainable aviation jet fuel to power 1 million kilometers of flights, for all aircraft operating in and out of Brisbane Airport when the fuel was put through the general fuel supply system.
