Supreme Court reverses Tenth Circuit decision on SRE ‘extensions’


The U.S. Supreme Court on June 25 reversed the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeal’s January 20, 2020, decision on small refinery exemptions (SREs), ruling that the U.S. EPA can extend SREs to small refineries whose earlier temporary exemptions had lapsed.

Iowa establishes carbon sequestration task force


Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds on June 22 signed an executive order to establish a carbon sequestration task force. Stakeholders representing the ethanol, biodiesel and biogas industries have been named as initial members of the new task force.

USDA: Soybean planted area up 5%, stocks down 44%


The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service on June 30 announced that U.S. farmers planted an estimated 87.6 million acres of soybeans this year, up 5 percent when compared to 2020. Harvested area is also expected to be up 5 percent.

US biodiesel exports up in May


The U.S. exported 82,320.3 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends of B30 or greater in May, up from 69,488.5 metric tons in April and 69,973 metric tons in May 2020, according to data released by the USDA on July 2.

EIA: US biofuel capacity up in April


The U.S. EIA released its latest Monthly Biofuels Capacity and Feedstock Update on June 30, reporting that production capacity for both fuel ethanol and “other” biofuels increased in April. Capacity for biodiesel held steady.

Canada launches $1.5 billion Clean Fuels Fund


The government of Canada on June 21 launched a C$1.5 billion Clean Fuels Fund with a call for proposals for projects that will increase the country’s capacity to produce clean fuels, including ethanol, renewable diesel, SAF, RNG and others.
