Johanns joins protest against EPA land use theory

Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) sent a letter to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson last Thursday criticizing EPA's indirect land use modeling, which has an impact on the imlementation of RFS2. "According to this theory, an increase in production of biofuels in the United States results in decreased grain exports to other countries, which in turn leads those countries to cut down their forests to plant more crops," Johanns stated in an official release.READ MORE

Greenhunter pursues restructuring options

Greenhunter Energy Inc. of Grapevine, Tex., is pursuing restructuring options including the sale of its 105 MMgy biodiesel refinery on the Houston ship channel, Green Hunter Biofuels LLC. GreenHunter's stock saw sharp gains when the company announced that Ronald Ormand of West LB AG, the German bank that serves as GreenHunter's senior lender, had joined the board of directors.READ MORE Bioenergy Canada

Continental releases results of biofuel demonstration

Continental Airlines announced the results of its Jan. 7 biofuel demonstration flight, which was conducted in partnership with Boeing, GE Aviation/CFM International, and Honeywell's UOP. The biofuel blend performed as well as or better than traditional jet fuel, displaying an approximately 1.1 percent increase in fuel efficiency over traditional jet fuel in different stages of the demonstration flight. Overall life cycle greenhouse gas emissions related to using a biofuel of the nature used on the Continental demonstration flight are estimated to be reduced by 60 percent to 80 percent as compared to traditional jet fuel.READ MORE

National Biodiesel Board launches Facebook group

As biodiesel industry leaders meet this week in one of the oldest advocacy centers of the U.S., they are also venturing into one of the newest mediums. The National Biodiesel Board announced today at its annual June board meeting in Washington, D.C. that it has created a new home base on Facebook for biodiesel fans. From the biodiesel-curious to the biodiesel advocate, the new National Biodiesel Board Group will serve as another outlet for biodiesel information and discussion.READ MORE

Costa Rica to test New Generation biofuel

New Generation Biofuels Holdings Inc. has signed a letter of intent with Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), an autonomous institution of the government of Costa Rica. ICE will evaluate the potential for licensing New Generation's technology and building a facility in Costa Rica to manufacture fuel for electrical generation. "We look forward to working with ICE to explore this opportunity to provide Costa Rica with an environmentally sound fuel, based on locally produced feedstock, which should mitigate the need to use Costa Rica's foreign exchange earnings to purchase imported fuel oil," said New Generation Biofuels CEO Cary Claiborne.READ MORE

UK Green Fuels acquires US micro processor firm

The United Kingdom's Green Fuels Ltd. has acquired the assets of Renewal Fuels Inc. and Renewal Biodiesel Inc., Milwaukee, Wis., to create Green Fuels America Inc. with headquarters in Sparks, Nev., where Renewal Fuels had manufactured its FuelMeister personal biodiesel processor. The plant will continue to manufacture the FuelMeister as well as Green Fuel's slightly larger Fuelpod systems. In mid-June, Green Fuels America rolled out Fuelpod2 in the U.S. market, a micro processor measuring 24 inches wide by 60 inches tall. The new Fuelpod uses automation and air operated controls to improve the safety for home processors.READ MORE
