Pinnacle begins pellet production at new British Columbia plant

Pinnacle Renewable Holdings Inc. announced Nov. 27 that it has commenced initial pellet production at its new production facility in Smithers, British Columbia, which is owned 70 percent by Pinnacle and 30 percent by West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd.
On Nov. 28, the U.K. government released an action plan that aims to enable the development of the nation's first carbon capture, usage and storage project. Biomass U.K., an affiliate of the U.K. REA, has spoken out in support of the action plan.
The U.S. EPA has issued a proposed rule to amend its 2015 NSPS for residential wood heaters that would provide retailers additional time to sell existing inventories of heaters and forced air furnaces. The agency also issued a related ANPR.
On Nov. 21, Pöyry announced Baltania OÜ has awarded the company an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services contract for a torrefied pellet plant under development in Vägari, Estonia.

International technology group Andritz has received an order from Toyo Engineering Corp., Japan, to deliver a PowerFluid Circulating Fluidized Bed boiler with flue gas cleaning system for a new biomass power plant to be built in Kamisu.
On Nov. 15, the U.K. Committee on Climate Change published a report on biomass that has determined sustainably sourced biomass feedstocks can play a fundamental role in decarbonizing the U.K. economy.
The Canadian government has announced it will provide financial support to aid the development of a fully integrated industrial wood pellet and sawmill complex under development by Granule 777 Inc. in Quebec adjacent to its Barrette-Chapais sawmill.

Drax generates £1.6 billion and supports over 17,500 UK jobs

Based on Drax's operations in the energy sector and its use of British businesses across its supply chain, an analysis by Oxford Economics estimates that the company contributed £1.65 billion to the economy and supported 17,500 jobs last year.
Enviva Partners has released third quarter financial results, reporting increased revenue, net income and gross margin. The company also announced plans to expand its operations, including the addition of new capacity at two existing pellet plants.
The latest Drax Electric Insights report shows Britain's power system hit a new milestone during the third quarter of 2018, with installed capacity from renewables overtaking capacity from fossil fuels for the first time.
US ambassador visits Drax Power Station

U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson recently visited Drax Power Station to learn more about the U.K.'s largest power station. About 60 percent of the biomass used to fuel the power station comes from the U.S. South.
SIMEC Atlantis Energy Ltd. has announced the conversion of its U.K.-based Uskmouth Power Station is expected to be complete by the end of 2020. Once operational, the facility will generate 220 MW of power using energy pellets made from waste.
EIA updates bioenergy production, capacity forecasts

The U.S. EIA has released the November edition of its Short-Term Energy Outlook, predicting that nonhydropower renewables will provided more than 10 percent of electricity generation in 2018, increasing to nearly 11 percent in 2019.

Contest on National Mall to showcase wood, pellet stoves

The Wood Stove Design Challenge, an international competition to showcase innovative and clean-burning wood stoves, will begin on Nov. 9 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., according to the Alliance for Green Heat.
The EPA, UDSA and DOE sent a letter Congress Nov. 1 describing the agencies' work to ensure consistent federal policy on forest biomass energy and promote policies that encourage the treatment of biomass as a carbon-neutral energy solution.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration recently released data showing that U.S. manufacturers produced approximately 700,000 tons of densified biomass fuel in July, with sales reaching 570,000 tons.
