Construction is expected to begin early next year on another large-scale biodiesel plant in Washington State. Washington Biodiesel is planning a 36 MMgy plant being near Warden, Wash., which is located in southeast Washington just south of Interstate 90.

The biodiesel plant will be built simultaneously with a canola crushing facility. McKinstry Inc., which has offices in Washington and Oregon, will be building the biodiesel plant using a process design provided by Lurgi PSI. Minneapolis, Minn.-based Crown Iron Works is providing the crushing technology and equipment.

Both facilities will be built adjacent an existing grain elevator, according to Jeff Stevens, Washington Biodiesel's chief technology officer. He said the elevator site, which will be expanded, provides grain storage and rail access. A Columbia Basin Railroad short line serves the site.

Stevens said the biodiesel plant will use canola oil as feedstock. He said he expects much of the canola to be initially sourced from Canada until local sources are developed. CHS Inc. will source the plant's canola and provide marketing for the fuel and canola meal. U.S. BioEnergy will market the fuel in a joint venture with CHS. Last week the companies announced Provista, an ethanol and biodiesel marketing joint venture. CHS acquired a 50 percent interest in U.S. BioEnergy's ethanol marketing business in March 2006.

The permitting process is underway for the Warden plant, according to Stevens. He said start-up is anticipated for first quarter 2008.

Washington Biodiesel is being developed on the heels of another large-scale plant breaking ground in the state. In October, Imperium Renewables began full-scale work on a 100 MMgy plant in Grays Harbor, Wash. The plant is expected to be the nation's largest when it begins production in June 2007.

Washington currently has one commercial-scale biodiesel producer. Imperium Renewables-owned Seattle Biodiesel produces 5 MMgy in Seattle, Wash.
