Tacoma, Wash.-based Sound Refining Inc. held a grand opening for its first in-line ratio biodiesel blending terminal in the Puget Sound region in September. The station has been operational since April, automatically mixing ultra-low sulfur diesel and soy-based biodiesel with petroleum diesel in different blend ratios, according to Sound Refining spokeswoman Bet Simpson. The terminal features a touch screen for blend requests, dye or undyed options, mechanized heating, and filtering capabilities, according to Simpson. The terminal currently has 85,000 barrels of BQ-9000 spec biodiesel available and intends to double capacity by next year. "We want to be the hub for biodiesel blending in the Northwest," Simpson said. "It allows us to introduce people to biodiesel who may not have expressed interest in it before."
In Florida, Jacksonville-based Gate Biofuels LLC, a subsidiary of Gate Petroleum, intends to build a 1.3 million-barrel multi-biofuel blending terminal there. It would be the first of its kind in the state. The rack-loaded biofuel blending station would supply B2 and B20 blends. Initial permitting tasks are underway. Construction is expected to begin in October 2008 with operation starting by August 2010, according to Gate Biofuels President R.B. "Buzz" Hoover. The terminal "would be capable of receiving and shipping ethanol and biodiesel via rail, water and truck," he said.
Approximately 500,000 of the 1.3 million barrels are allotted for general storage, including a 25,000-barrel tank for biodiesel and a 50,000-barrel tank for ethanol. The remaining 800,000 barrels are planned for additional storage by third parties. Once the terminal is operational, the company plans to exclusively offer B10 and E20 at its 44 Jacksonville retail stations, Hoover said.
