Biodiesel figures to consider

December 15, 2010

BY Ron Kotrba

I thought I would take this opportunity to share some figures we collected from our plant map project. According to our latest information, we list 174 U.S. biodiesel plants in existence and under construction, with a total installed or under construction production capacity of about 3.2 billion gallons (2.8 billion of which in installed capacity, with the remainder being listed as under construction).

The cumulative multifeedstock designation for U.S. and Canada also grew to 57 percent (based on total capacity volume of existing plants and intended feedstock for those under construction) versus 41 percent in 2009.

Interestingly, plants with a production capacity of about two thirds of the U.S. total (roughly 2 billion) are registered with EPA under the RFS2 program, while one third is not yet complete with the process or has not attempted to do so.

The 2011 U.S. and Canada biodiesel wall map will be available in about a month or so.
