Biomass Trading on the Web

Need 14 tons of fine wood sanding dust every two weeks, or how about 6,000 gallons of used frying oil every week? If so, the North Carolina Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance has a Web site just for you. The agency has launched North Carolina Biomass Trader, which can be viewed at http://www.ncbiomasstrader.org, to connect biomass buyers and sellers.

The site allows sellers to list materials that they have available and buyer to list materials that they need. For example, one buyer is looking for clean, nontoxic sludges.

The service is "designed to provide a marketplace for biomass materials that can be used in biobased manufacturing, converted to energy, or used in energy generating processes or technologies," according to the Web site.

The site also provides links to other sites that may be valuable to biomass producers and consumers. The links allow users to go to sites that have information about funding and financial incentives and to calculate the energy content of biomass.

Of course, this is probably not ideal for people far from North Carolina as transportation costs will be a factor. But, if this site is successful, other states may use it as a model to develop their own biomass-based Internet trading site.
