CHS awaits government backing for biodiesel projects

October 16, 2007

Plans for energy cooperative CHS Inc. to enter the renewable diesel industry have been put on hold until support from Congress becomes official. CHS has had exploratory conversations regarding potential renewable diesel production at its Laurel, Mont., petroleum refinery, but no commitments have been made until the company has "a little more certainty about government support," according to CHS spokeswoman Lani Jordan. Congress is currently considering removal of the $1-per-gallon biodiesel blender's tax credit that renewable diesel producers are eligible for under current legislative language. CHS, based in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., is already heavily involved in ethanol through a biofuels marketing joint venture with Provista and as part-owner of U.S. BioEnergy Corp.
