Congress introduces E85 legislation

July 1, 2006

A bipartisan group of representatives introduced legislation in early May that would provide incentives for gasoline retailers to install alternative fueling infrastructure for fuels such as E85. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., would provide gas station owners with a reimbursement for 30 percent of the cost (not to exceed $30,000) of replacing a petroleum tank with or adding a renewable fuel tank. The funding would come from interest garnered by the Leaking Underground Storage Tanks Trust Fund, a fund designed to help gasoline retailers replace leaking storage facilities.

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D. introduced similar act in the Senate in early April. It is called the Alternative Energy Refueling System Act (S. 2614 or H.R. 5346).
