Earthrace sets world record

July 14, 2008

After overcoming a damaged propeller and driveshaft, monsoon conditions, and funding problems, Earthrace, a 78-foot trimaran fueled with biodiesel, set a new world record for circumnavigating the globe June 27. The journey was completed in 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes, beating the old record by nearly 14 days. Skipper Pete Bethune, a former oil worker, dedicated six years to breaking the record. "I hope that Earthrace and her adventure highlight to the world the importance of continuing to research and develop alternative fuel sources for global use," he said.
