First E85 pumps in New York State begin operation

May 22, 2007

"What we are showcasing today is what New York State has been striving for," said Peter R. Smith, president and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Smith was on hand Monday as KNC Holdings Inc. announced the opening of New York's first E85 pumps at two stations—one at the Campus Mobil station in Albany and another in Warrensburg, N.Y. Public officials joined Christian P King, president of KNC Holdings, and representatives from General Motors who were in attendance to showcase flexible-fuel vehicles the company produces.

The opening of the E85 pumps comes after NYSERDA's recent New York State Bio-Fuel Station Initiative, providing up to $50,000 of incentives per site for retail E85 or biodiesel pumps. The two stations opened Monday are the first two funded under the pilot phase of the program. NYSERDA plans to fund an additional 300 facilities across the state with $9.5 million.

"Today is the first step for New York consumers to do their part in helping to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by purchasing E85," King said Monday. "In addition, E85 is 100 percent American made, burns cleaner than traditional gasoline and the price should be attractive to consumers in the short term thanks to state and federal subsidies."

There are nearly 200,000 flexible-fuel vehicles registered to owners in New York State.
