GEC changes name to broaden focus on biofuels

A voluntary organization of governors, known as the Governors' Ethanol Coalition, voted to change the name of its group to the Governor's Biofuels Coalition at its most recent meeting, held in Billings, Mont. Sept 29-30.
The coalition was organized in 1991 with the intent of promoting the increased use of ethanol-based fuels in the governors' respective states. The group's current members include governors from 34 states, including North Dakota, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, Montana, Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is the 2008 chairman of the coalition.
According to Ashley Cross, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the governors voted to change the name of the coalition in order to reflect their goal of promoting all biofuels, not just ethanol. She said the coalition has always been supportive of biodiesel and other resources.
