HPD, a Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies company with offices in Plainfield, Ill., and Bilbao, Spain, has been awarded the design-build project for the evaporation system for Abengoa Bioenergy's new ethanol plant in the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The 480 MMly (126 MMgy) will be one of the largest ethanol plants in Europe.

The stillage evaporation system supplied by HPD employs a three-effect falling film evaporation train followed by a high-solids concentration unit to produce up to 35 percent total solids entering the dryers. According to HPD, the system features enhanced, forced circulation evaporation that allows higher solids concentration with minimal fouling, even with the high viscosity experienced with the processing of stillage. The technology increases heat transfer efficiency while reducing power consumption when compared to standard forced circulation designs.

HPD provides process solutions that utilize evaporation and crystallization as well as ceramic membrane technology. HPD is a Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies company, the technological subsidiary of Veolia Water, a global company providing water service technology for industry and municipalities.
