Federal lawmakers have passed the Fiscal Year 20010 Budget Resolution. The legislation passed the U.S. Senate by a vote of 53 to 43 during a late-night vote April 29. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the budget in a majority vote of 233 to 193 on April 22.

A portion of the $3.4 trillion federal budget will support clean energy development and environmental preservation. Subtitle A, Sec. 302 of the bill states that a portion of that funding could be allocated to promote renewable energy development, including expediting research into the use of midlevel ethanol blends.

In a statement regarding the budget, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the budgest is a one-two punch for clean technology. "It boosts funding for renewables while slashing tax breaks for fossil fuels," she said.

According to Franz Matzner, the acting legislative director for the Natural Resources Defense Council, the budget will help restore scientific integrity to Washington, D.C. "This is the greenest, most forward-looking budget Congress has passed in a decade," he said. "Congress is forging a new, clean-energy future for our nation that will create jobs and jumpstart our economy."
