A new initiative in Europe aims to expedite the deployment of advanced biofuel technologies. In early February, chief executive officers representing seven European biofuel producers and airlines met in Brussels to launch the Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels initiative. Organizations participating in the group include Chemtex, British Airways, BTG, Chemrec, Clariant, Dong Energy and UPM.

According to information released by the new organization, representatives of participating companies have established a strategy that aims to accelerate market penetration, technology deployment and use. As part of the strategy, members of the new organization will support accelerated research and innovation into emerging technologies supported by public and private research, development and deployment programs. They will also work with members of the supply chain to further the development of worldwide sustainability certification methods. In addition, the initiative supports the establishment of financing structures to facilitate the implementation of sustainable biofuel projects. The organization’s members will also publically promote the benefits of advanced, sustainable biofuels.

A manifesto signed by representatives of each company specifies that the Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels aim to speak with a single voice and take a lead position in the development of advanced biofuels. The group’s members will address EU policy institutions, national governments and financial institutions of common interest. They will also work with other related international groups.

“The Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels are determined in stimulating the EU policy towards accelerated industrial research and innovation into emerging biofuel technologies, including algae and new conversion pathways, supported by public and private policies promoting deployment,” said the group in its manifesto.
