North Carolina county builds EcoComplex

September 16, 2008

Catawba County, N.C., plans to build a $1.7 million biodiesel research facility, called the EcoComplex. Appalachian State University will lease the research space, and any excess biodiesel produced there will be used to power the county's vehicle fleet. It will produce 500-gallon batches for an annual total of 50,000 gallons. Located on county land near Blackburn Landfill, the research facility will utilize waste heat produced by the landfill's methane-powered electrical generators. Land near the landfill will also be used to grow potential biodiesel feedstocks, including canola and sunflowers.
