On 'Feedstock Neutrality'

March 1, 2004

"Thank you for asking that question and I mean that … It gives me an opportunity to talk about that, because I think it is a misperception that needs to be clarified. The biodiesel industry is a big band.

"The soybean farmers, through their national checkoff started this organization, gave birth to this organization, still fuel this organization, still fuel this industry … they have invested millions and millions of dollars … and I think they deserve some acknowledgement for that.

"We've got some United Soybean Farmers here that have been involved-some state soybean leaders as well-those leaders have developed this industry with a very broad vision, and a broad vision that understands that biodiesel is indeed for everyone.

"It's going to take all sorts of feedstocks. And the leaders we have on our organizational board-we just switched to a governing board structure-and the farmers are still very well represented on that board, but we have gone to a structure on that board of directors that builds in representation for recycled oils and animal fats.

"In fact, those farmers elected someone to be an officer on the executive committee. Fred Wellons [of Baker Commodities] is an officer of the executive committee to represent the rendering interests and the other feedstocks.

"So I think that is a very broad step. It's something that really demonstrates that this industry-and this organization-has room for everybody and that we really need to work together."
