Sen. Lugar addresses Brookings Institute

May 1, 2006

Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., recently spoke before the Brookings Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, about America's energy security and the importance of promoting renewable fuels. Specifically, Lugar said it was time that consumers had access to E85; if the major oil companies didn't want to install the pumps, Congress may have to step in.
"If these [oil] companies do not take advantage of the incentives Congress has provided, I would be in favor of legislation mandating that they install E85 pumps in appropriate markets," Lugar said. "It is time for the oil companies to make E85 available to the consumer."
Lugar added that he would be working with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to introduce legislation that would provide auto makers incentives to produce flexible fuel vehicles and establish a director of energy security.
