VeraSun Energy to hold groundbreaking at new ethanol plant

South Dakota-based VeraSun Energy Corp. will hold a public groundbreaking Thursday, May 31, at its newest plant at Welcome, Minn. Construction on the 110 MMgy facility began in November 2006 and is expected to open in the first quarter of 2008. The ethanol plant will utilize 39 million bushels of corn annually and produce 350,000 tons of dried distillers grains.

The public ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the plant construction site at 1444 120th Street near Welcome. The site is nine miles west of Fairmont, Minn. Present at the ceremony will be state, local and community officials and VeraSun representatives. Scheduled speakers include Minnesota State Sen. Jule Rosen, Minnesota State Rep. Bob Bunther and Roger Moore, vice president of the Minnesota Corn Growers Association's board of directors. AgriTalk's Mike Adams will host the event.

VeraSun Energy is based in Brookings, S.D., and currently has three ethanol plants in operation at Aurora, S.D., Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Charles City, Iowa. VeraSun also has two plants under construction in Hartley, Iowa, and Welcome. In addition, VeraSun is developing a facility near Reynolds, Ind. When all six facilities are on line, VeraSun will have a capacity of 670 MMgy.
