Xylose Technologies, USDA lab finalize R&D agreement

February 1, 2006

Xylose Technologies Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Xethanol Corp., finalized a joint research and development (R&D) agreement with USDA Forest Service's Forest Products Lab (FPL) in Madison, Wis., in early December. Thomas Jeffries of the Institute for Microbial and Biochemical Technology at the FPL is directing the program.

The purpose of this agreement is to develop yeast strains that more efficiently produce xylitol, a natural sweetener, from cellulose. Once developed, Xylose Technologies will hold the commercial rights for the cooperatively developed technology. Xylose Technologies already holds a license for its patented fermentation process, which the company claims can convert xylose into ethanol and xylitol. EP
