The U.S. EPA posted updated small refinery exemption (SRE) data to its website on Nov. 21 showing that five new SRE applications have been filed for compliance year 2019 and two SRE petitions previously filed for compliance year 2018 have been declared ineligible.
According to the EPA, 10 SRE petitions for compliance year 2019 have now been filed. All 10 are still pending.
The data also shows that two previously pending SRE petitions for compliance year 2018 have been declared ineligible. There are currently no additional SRE petitions pending for compliance year 2018. Of the 42 total SRE petitions filed for compliance year 2018, 31 were approved, six were denied, two were declared ineligible and three were withdrawn. The 31 approved SRE petitions for compliance year 2018 exempted 13.42 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel from meeting Renewable Fuel Standard blending requirements, accounting for approximately 1.43 billion in exempted RINs.
A small change was also made to the EPA’s SRE dashboard on Nov. 21. The agency previously reported the number of petitions declared ineligible and the number of petitions withdrawn as a single category. The SRE dashboard now includes separate columns for petitions declared ineligible and those that are withdrawn.
