White Mountain Biodiesel undergoes massive plant expansion

White Mountain Biodiesel LLC is undergoing a major expansion at its biodiesel production facility in North Haverhill, New Hampshire. The two-year expansion project will increase production capacity of White Mountain Biodiesel from 3 MMgy to more than 16 MMgy and includes a 10,000-square-foot addition to its existing facility and installation of nearly 1.2 million gallons of additional processing and storage tanks.

The company says the improvements will be made using proprietary technologies developed in-house over the past nine years, and the project will result in significant cost reductions from increased efficiencies.

Presby Construction will complete the new building addition, and the tank installation, piping, pumps and electrical improvements will be completed by the current White Mountain Biodiesel staff.

The company announced it has also begun purchasing a fleet of tankers and pedal trucks to enable sales of blends up to B99.9 to retail customers within New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. The trucks will be pre-2007 models without diesel particulate filters or selective catalytic reduction systems, according to White Mountain Biodiesel, enabling the vehicles to be run on high blends of biodiesel. The trucks will also pick up used cooking oil from New England collectors and for the delivery of glycerin and other waste products to New England digester facilities. 

White Mountain Biodiesel is working directly with Suntec pumps and other manufacturers to develop a reliable pump configuration to enable home heating systems to function reliably on higher blends of biodiesel. 

The biodiesel producer also announced it has begun taking legislative action in its home state to qualify biodiesel as part of New Hampshire’s renewable fuels portfolio.

BQ-9000 accreditation is also being pursued, as White Mountain Biodiesel has submitted its initial documentation for the process.

In addition, White Mountain Biodiesel is exploring options with Caterpillar to supply generators capable of running on B100 to supply the expanded facility with 100 percent of its electrical needs.
