A research effort from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif., received a Grand Challenge Award from the 25x25 Alliance and the USDA for its algae production system. The system uses photobioreactors to mass-produce algae in a controlled environment, and the algae could be used in biodiesel production. In addition to the award, the Cal Poly team, which included private sector, industrial and institutional partners, received a $400,000 grant to continue its research.
