Biodiesel Week rolls through Iowa

May 1, 2004

Promotions for the first annual Iowa Soy Biodiesel Week literally rolled across the state May 17-18.

Members of the United Soybean Board (USB), the Iowa Soybean Promotion Board (ISPB), Iowa Soybean Association farmer-directors and a member of the National Biodiesel Board participated in a two-day, six-city bus trek with the objective of increasing soy biodiesel awareness.

The group held a press conference and West Central Cooperative of Ralson donated a 50-gallon drum of B100 to each city the biodiesel-powered bus visited. The bus also stopped at two grade schools to award $50 savings bonds to the winners of an essay contest. Event coordinator and ISPB Marketing Assistant Sarah Van Gorp said she was surprised at the fourth-graders' biodiesel knowledge. Essay topics included environmental concerns, B20 prices and the amount of biodiesel a bushel of soybeans produces.

"They definitely did their research," Van Gorp said.

The state currently has three biodiesel fuel producers and marketers, 16 biodiesel retail-fueling sites and more than 215 biodiesel distributors.
