Brazil’s special committee on national development unanimously approved a senate bill Nov. 11 that mandates 7 percent biodiesel in diesel fuel, increasing to 10 percent within three years.

According to a notice by Brazil’s senate, Sen. Maggi suggested that after obtaining positive testing results, the government should authorize up to 15 percent biodiesel blending in diesel fuel.

The senate summary also states that the bill would require 20 percent biodiesel use for diesel-powered public transport vehicles in cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants.

Soy biodiesel’s environmental and economic benefits were cited as reasons to approve the measure.
