On May 21, Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., sent a letter to President Donald Trump asking him to take steps to lower gas prices by allowing year-round sales of E15.
Within in the letter, Donnelly said rising gas prices are impacting families and businesses in Indiana. He cited the U.S. Energy Information Administration as predicting gas prices will reach almost $3 per gallon in June, while averaging at least $2.90 per gallon during the April to September summer driving season. If realized, those prices will be a 20 percent increase when compared to last summer’s average of $2.41 per gallon.
According to Donnelly, one step that would help mitigate the circumstances causing increased gas prices would be to lift current restrictions on year-round sales of E15. Sales of the fuel blend are currently restricted in most areas of the country from June 1 through Sept. 30. “Reducing this regulatory restriction, particularly before June 1, would help Hoosier families and businesses by reducing gas prices,” Donnelly wrote. “It would also help the economy by increasing income in rural communities struggling with increased market volatility and difficult economic conditions.”
