E15 video promises to pack a punch with retailers

Since becoming a mom, I've widened my circle of friends to include other moms. It isn't that I didn't have mom friends before, but the fact that they were moms wasn't, specifically, significant for me. Now I seek out moms, especially moms of children my child's age. Some of those moms live near me, so we can meet for play dates in the park or in someone's yard for splashing in a swimming pool. Other moms I have gotten to know through involvement in Facebook mom support groups. If I want to know a good brand name for overnight diapers or whether I should take my little one in to see a doctor, I turn to other moms.

It's the same premise that was used for a new video about E15, which was released May 1. It features gas retailers from the Minneapolis area, who talk about their customers' positive reaction to E15 and the benefits it has brought their businesses. The target audience is gas retailers from Chicago, where an ordinance requiring retailers sell E15 is under consideration.

Sue Retka Schill wrote about this for our December 2014 issue. Although the vote is still to come, the evidence is mounting that this would be a good move for the city. A report came out showing that E15 would provide significant enviromental benifits, such as reducing carbon pollution from Illinois by up to 663,646 tons per year. And, retailers near Chicago and elsewhere are continuing to move toward offering E15, such as the Murphy USA annoucement and the more recent annoucement from Kum & Go. We can only hope that the Chicago city council is paying attention amd will vote yes for E15.

Going back to the video, I believe it's very well done and, I suspect, will catch the attention of gas retailers who haven't yet added E15 to their product offerings. Like me and my mom friends, a retailers is going to sit up and take notice when another retailer tells a story about their personal experience with E15. That's going to resonate in a different way than hearing about the positives of E15 from any number of ethanol producers, farmers, journalists (like me) or other ethanol industry supporters. (Although those voices are important too.)

The retailers in the video outline several convincing reasons for selling E15. One important one on the list is the almighty dollar. Once customers are educated about E15, they try it out because of it's attractive price, and keep coming back for more. “I've been in business 43 years,” said Roger Green, owner of Kaposia Convenience Center in South St. Paul, Minnesota. “I've never put something in that had such a big, big increase in volume.” He added that his in-store sales have increased as well.

Glen Seutter, owner of Glen's 1 Stop, in Minnetonka, Minnesota, said he uses E15 in his own vehicle. “I'm ready for the future,” he said. “And the future, I think, is the biofuels.”

The video by Clear the Air Chicago won't only be interesting to retailers, however. I encourage you to check it out and share it with others!
