The U.S. EPA has released data showing that more than 1.7 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in April, up from nearly 1.58 billion generated during the same month of 2021.

More than 50.42 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in April, including 40.04 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 7.33 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 2.8 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 157,204 generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 86,794 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.

Total D3 RIN generation for the first four months of 2022 reached 143.99 million. That volume includes 114.49 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 20.76 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 8.09 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 475,799 generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 174,307 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.

Nearly 498.23 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in April, including 216.14 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 172.02 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 64.76 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 44.81 million generated for biodiesel importers, and 493,672 generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.

Total D4 RIN generation for the first four months of the year reached nearly 1.74 billion. That volume includes 721.66 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 656.37 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 243.28 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, nearly 108 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 5.29 million generated for renewable jet fuel by foreign entities, 4.55 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, and 37,939 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers.

More than 18.94 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in April, including nearly 9 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 6.84 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 2.24 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 393,901 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, 372,328 generated for LPG by domestic producers, and 105,556 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

Total D5 RIN generation for the first four months of the year was at 81.46 million. That volume includes 31.97 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 26.09 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 10.69 million generated for ethanol by importers, 9.55 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 1.37 million generated for LPG by domestic producers, 1.33 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 457,055 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

Nearly 1.14 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in April, including 1.13 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 8.83 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 10.3 million generated for ethanol by importers.

Total D6 RIN generation for the first four months of 2022 reached nearly 4.69 billion. That volume includes 4.65 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 30.93 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 3.2 million generated for ethanol by importers.

No D7 cellulosic RINs were generated in April. Total D7 RIN generation for the first four months of the year was at 58,930, all of which were generated for cellulosic heating oil by importers in February.

According to the EPA, more than 6.65 billion RINs were generated under the RFS during the first four months of 2022, up from 5.89 billion generated during the same four-month period of 2021.
