The U.S. EPA has released updated renewable identification number (RIN) data showing that nearly 1.85 billion RINs were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in June, up from 1.77 billion RINs generated during the same month of 2021.
Nearly 53.8 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in June, including 43.76 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 6.76 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 3.01 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 142,896 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers, and 124,356 generated for liquefied RNG by importers.
Total D3 RIN generation for the first six months of 2022 reached 255.44 million. That volume includes 204.92 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 35.23 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 13.95 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 761,804 generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 576,022 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.
Approximately 490.64 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in June, including 213.65 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 189.75 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 54.53 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 28.97 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 2.48 million generated for renewable jet fuel by foreign entities, and 1.28 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.

Total D4 RIN generation for the first half of this year reached 2.74 billion. That volume includes 1.15 billion generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 1.06 billion generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 367.11 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 154.43 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 7.74 million generated for renewable jet fuel by foreign entities, 6.32 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, and 37,939 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers.
Nearly 13.7 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in June, including 6.42 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 4.02 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 2.54 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 498,104 generated for LPG by domestic producers, 144,753 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 71,031 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.
Total D5 RIN generation for the first six months of the year reached 129.23 million. That volume includes 50.76 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 37.91 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 21.38 million generated for ethanol by importers, 14.88 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 1.94 million generated for LGP by domestic producers, 1.76 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 601,978 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.
More than 1.29 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in June, including 1.28 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 4.57 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 1.19 million generated for ethanol by importers.

Total D6 RIN generation or the first half of 2022 reached 7.21 billion. That volume includes 7.16 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 47.12 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 6.58 million generated for ethanol by importers.
According to the EIA, 102,064 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were also generated in June, all for cellulosic heating oil by importers. A total of 160,995 D7 RINs were generated during the first six months of the year, all for cellulosic heating oil by importers.
Total RIN generation for the first half of 2022 was at 10.34 billion, up from 9.38 billion RINs that were generated during the same period of 2021.
