The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for May. More than 1.16 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated during the month, along with 211.93 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs and 34.23 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs. No D3 cellulosic biofuel or D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in May.

Approximately 5.22 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs have been generated for ethanol since the beginning of the year. Ethanol has also accounted for 187.68 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs since January.

From January through May, the vast majority of the more than 5.22 billion D6 renewable fuel RINS were generated by domestic producers, with only 22.86 million generated by foreign parties. No D6 renewable fuel RINs have been generated by importers to date in 2013.  However, only 18.3 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs have been generated domestically, with 178.69 generated by importers. NO D5 RINs were generated by foreign producers.

As of May, the EPA estimates that 485.99 million assigned and nearly 4.5 billion separated D6 renewable fuel RINs were available. The agency also estimates that 13.83 million assigned advanced biofuel and 144.64 separated D5 advanced biofuel RINs are available. On a combined basis, only 79.26 million of the more than 6.28 billion RINs generated across all five RIN categories in 2013 had been retired by the close of May. Total unretired (locked and available) RINs equaled more than 6.2 billion in May.
