Valero Energy Corp.’s ethanol plant near Linden, Indiana, experienced a fire on Oct. 13. No injuries were reported. According to Bill Day, vice president of communications at Valero, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Valero acquired the 120 MMgy Linden plant in late 2009. The facility was previously owned by VersSun Energy Corp. Following VeraSun’s 2009 bankruptcy, the facility was acquired by ASA Ethanol Holdings LLC. Valero later acquired the Linden plant from ASA. The company’s 120 MMgy Bloomingburg, Ohio, plant was also acquired as part of that transaction.
Approximately one week prior to the incident at Valero’s Linden plant, the company’s Bloomingburg facility also experienced a fire. According to Day, the Linden fire was separate from, and a different kind of incident, than the earlier one at Bloomingburg. “In both cases, however, the local fire departments responded quickly and professionally,” he said.
Valero currently owns 11 ethanol plants, with a combined 1.3 billion gallons of annual production capacity.
