The German biodiesel quality management association AGQM has just released results from its second round of no-harm tests for antioxidants to be used in biodiesel-blended heating oil, and one additive has passed—IONOL BH 1000 from Oxiris Chemicals S.A.

In 2015, AGQM launched its first no-harm test for stabilizers used in B20 heating oil, after providing similar no-harm tests for antioxidants used in on-road biodiesel blends since 2008.

Once the new procedure was developed, two additives were tested and both failed. IONOL BH 1000 is the first additive for B20 heating oil to pass and be added to the no-harm list for biodiesel-blended heating oil additives.

AGQM says to pass the test, any additive must be confirmed as ash-free. Additionally, the additized biodiesel is checked for selected parameters of EN 14214. While engine tests or compatibility with engine oils are not part of the bio heating oil test, “the well-known and important relative efficiency test is included,” the organization stated. “The test examines how efficient an additive is in comparison to the same concentration of butylhydroxytoluene (BHT).”
