The advanced biofuel and biobased chemical production company LS9 Inc. is having a busy summer. The synthetic microbial catalyst development firm that can produce renewable diesel drop-in ready fuel and a wide range of renewable alcohol products, recently announced a new chief financial officer. Jon Foster, a Silicon Valley veteran will take on the CFO role and bring his experience with clean energy to the company. Ed Dinneen, president and CEO of LS9, said Foster brings a unique set of skills to the company including a mix of financial skills and the experience gained from an advisory board position with the California Clean Energy Fund

Before his time in California, Foster served as deputy director in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. In addition to touting the team and enthusiasm at LS9, Foster said the backing of current investors will help position the company in the advanced biofuels and chemicals industry. The current investor list includes Flagship Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Chevron Technology Ventures and BlackRock.

The CFO hiring by LS9 is only one of many announcements from the company this summer. In mid-August, the company also announced the addition of Tjerk de Ruiter to its board of directors. Ruiter will serve as chair, and previously worked for another advanced biofuels player, Genencor.

In June, LS9 officially opened a demonstration facility in Okeechobee, Fla, completing a retrofit of a pilot facility where LS9 worked on its technology. The facility features a 3,800 and 135,000 liter fermenter, both of which are used in the company’s single-step fermentation approach that utilizes a specifically designed microbial catalyst.
