Oil refiner and renewable diesel producer Neste Corp. announced that its renewable fuels reduced global climate emissions by 8.3 million metric tons last year. The reduction is equivalent to removing 3 million passenger vehicles—or nearly half of the cars in Los Angeles, for example—from the roads for a year.

Increased output last year at Neste’s three renewable diesel plants in Finland, the Netherlands and Singapore led to a 24 percent hike in greenhouse gas emissions savings, from 6.7 million tons in 2016 to 8.3 million tons last year.

“Seeing these impressive numbers is very encouraging for us,” said Jeremy Baines, vice president of sales for Neste US Inc.

Earlier this month Neste placed second on the Global 100 list of the world’s most sustainable companies, marking its 12th time on the list and moving from 23rd place last year.

According to Neste, the Global 100 assesses publicly traded companies with revenues of $1 billion or more and ranking is based on publicly disclosed data. “The Global 100 sticks to indicators that can be objectively measured—it does not try to gauge companies’ exposure to qualitative sustainability risks,” Neste stated. “Thus, the evaluation is based on data, not judgment or reputation.”
