President Trump on Nov. 7 formally nominated current U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette to serve as the next secretary of energy. Brouillette will replace current Secretary of Energy Rick Perry if confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

The nomination follows an Oct. 17 announcement from Perry that he plans to resign from his post later this year. Trump nominated Perry to serve as energy secretary in December 2016. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 62 to 37 in March 2017.

Brouillette was confirmed to his current post at the DOE in August 2017 by a vote of 79-17. He previously served as head of public policy for financial services company USAA. Brouillette also previously served as vice president of Ford Motor Co. where he led the automaker’s domestic policy teams, and as chief of staff to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce. From 2001 to 2003, Brouillette was assistant secretary for energy for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs. He also served as a member of the Louisiana State Mineral and Energy Board from 2013 to 2016.

“It has been the opportunity of a lifetime to serve as Secretary of Energy. I have the utmost confidence the Department of Energy will continue to thrive under Dan Brouillette,” Perry said. “Dan has faithfully served as my Deputy, helping to advance American energy security and position the United States as the world’s premier energy leader. I fully endorse President Trump’s decision to nominate Dan and urge the U.S. Senate to expeditiously confirm him. I look forward to seeing all that the Department accomplishes under his steady leadership as Secretary of Energy.”

“I am honored to be nominated by President Trump to serve as the U.S. Secretary of Energy, and grateful to Secretary Perry for asking me to join him at the Department of Energy over two years ago,” Brouillette said. “If confirmed, I will further Secretary Perry’s legacy of promoting energy independence, innovation, and security for the American people.”

The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources is scheduled to hold a hearing on Brouillette’s nomination on Nov. 14. Additional information on the hearing is available on the committee’s website.
