UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, recently announced that a truckers’ strike severely impacted sugarcane processing activities during the second half of May. Only 32.38 million tons of sugarcane was processed during the two-week period, equating to a loss of approximately 4.5 grinding days on average.
According to UNICA, approximately 67.46 percent of the sugarcane processed during the second half of May was used to manufacture ethanol, up from 52.53 percent during the same period of last year.
The production of anhydrous ethanol reached 546.36 million liters (144.33 million gallons) during the second half of May, down 16.95 percent when compared to the first half of the month. Production of hydrous ethanol reached 1.2 billion liters during the second half of May, down 15.46 percent.
Production units in the south-central region of Brazil sold 564.45 million liters of hydrous ethanol during the second half of May, down from 760.03 million liters during the first half of the month and 601.47 million liters sold during the same period of 2017.

Only 226.95 million liters of anhydrous ethanol were sold during the second half of May, less than half of the volume sold during the same period of last year.

The U.S EPA on July 17 released data showing more than 1.9 billion RINs were generated under the RFS during June, down 11% when compared to the same month of last year. Total RIN generation for the first half of 2025 reached 11.17 billion.
